What does être dans la lune mean in French?

Être dans la lune literally says “to be in the moon”, but in everyday French it means to be distracted, absent-minded or lost in your thoughts. It is close to “to have your head in the clouds” in English. The useful learner move is to hear it as a whole expression, not to translate each word. You might say Il est dans la lune if someone misses a question because their mind is elsewhere.

What is the difference between être mal luné and être lunatique?

Être mal luné means someone is in a bad mood today; it points to a temporary mood. Être lunatique describes someone whose mood changes often or unpredictably. Both connect mood with the moon, but they are not identical. If your teacher or friend is irritated this morning, mal luné fits better. If someone often swings from cheerful to cold, lunatique is the more general personality description.

How do I use décrocher la lune and promettre la lune naturally?

Décrocher la lune means to achieve something extremely difficult, almost impossible. Promettre la lune means to promise too much, like promising the moon.
