You finally made it. You moved to Nice, one of the most beautiful cities on the French Riviera (Côte d’Azur). You imagined yourself soaking up the Mediterranean sun, strolling along the beach, and naturally picking up French just by living here. After all, how hard could it be?
But reality often feels different. You soon discover that French pronunciation is not always as it sounds, locals speak fast, and even simple conversations can feel intimidating. You freeze when you want to say something, and frustration grows.

The good news is: you don’t need to speak perfectly to connect. Even a few simple sentences can open doors and help you build meaningful connections in your new community.
If you’re settling into daily life in Nice, exploring the local markets, visiting cultural sites like the Cours Saleya or walking along the Promenade du Paillon, you’ll quickly notice how valuable even basic French can be.
For example, Christy, who moved to Nice as a retiree, shares her personal experience of adapting to life and language in this interview.
What is Shadowing?

One of the easiest ways to practice speaking French is a method called shadowing. It’s simple: you listen to a native speaker, and you repeat what they say, right after them. Like a shadow following a person.
Shadowing helps you:
- Improve pronunciation
- Get used to French rhythm and melody
- Build confidence speaking out loud
You don’t need a classroom or a teacher for this. You only need your voice and a few minutes a day.
Practice Speaking French on the Promenade des Anglais
I recently recorded a short video to help beginners practice shadowing while enjoying the beautiful Promenade des Anglais in Nice. In the video, I describe a simple scene: walking with my dog, seeing the sea, feeling the fresh air. You listen and repeat, sentence by sentence.
This exercise is perfect for:
- Absolute beginners (A1 level)
- Expats and retirees living in the French Riviera
- Anyone who wants to feel more confident speaking French
A Few Words Can Go a Long Way

Many beginners worry about making mistakes.
But in France, what matters most is the effort.
Even saying just a few words in French can change your experience.
Locals appreciate it when someone tries.
Often, the French will mirror your attitude.
If you’re open, smiling, and make the effort, you’ll find friendly and patient people ready to help you along the way.
Start Small, Stay Consistent
Learning French doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Short daily practice like shadowing allows you to improve little by little. As you build confidence, you’ll find it easier to order a coffee, chat with neighbors, or ask for directions.
If you’re living in Nice or anywhere along the French Riviera, shadowing is a simple tool you can use anytime. And every small step brings you closer to feeling at home in your new country.
